Walled cities have always held a universal fascination. I grew up within a stone's throw from two such cities. Both Vittoriosa and Valletta, the two Vs, have a strong link to the Order of St John. The World Heritage City of Valletta, soon to be the European Capital of Culture, came about as a result of a victorious war fought from behind the walls of Vittoriosa. Their stories of Knights and Grandmasters, their auberges and palaces intrigue me, as they do visitors and residents alike.

A city less congested
Ken Livingstone, the mayor of London, introduced a congestion charge to make London more manageable and its air more breathable. This has been greatly successful A similar scheme is being introduced to Valletta in March of 2007. It was meant to come about in January but there have been complications. A Park and Ride scheme is being prepared in Blata il-Bajda where one can park the car for free and enter Valletta with the free transport service provided. What will it mean for those visiting Valletta and the residents themselves? The congestion charge will hopefully discourage those that do not need to use the car, making it easier to park for those that do. It also means that a visitor might have to park outside of the city during the day (the congestion charge operates between 08:00 hrs and 19:00 hrs on weekdays and Saturday) and make use of the Park and Ride.
